What is the difference between median and average?

Average Giving

For people that match the filters you chose, add up all their giving and divide evenly among each person.

Say five people match your filters. Here is there giving.

$1,000
$0
$500
$0
$0

Total giving for these five people is $1,500. The average is $1,500 ÷ 5, or $300.

Median Giving

Find the people who match the filters you chose and rank them by giving. The middle person's giving is the median.

Here's the group from the example above, this time ordered by giving.

$0
$0
$0
$500
$1,500

The median is $0. Though some gave, the middle case did not give. If less than half of people gave, the median will always be $0.
